Definition of Assertiveness:

Assertiveness is the ability to express one's thoughts, feelings, and needs directly, honestly, and respectfully while considering the rights and feelings of others. It involves standing up for oneself without being aggressive or passive, maintaining confidence and clear communication.

Test: Are You Assertive?

Below is a self-assessment test to help you determine how assertive you are. Answer each question honestly with the following options: a. Always. b.Often c. sometimes. d.Rarely. e.Never


Questions:

  1. When someone interrupts you during a conversation, do you politely ask them to let you finish speaking?

  2. If you disagree with someone’s opinion, do you express your point of view calmly and respectfully?

  3. Do you feel comfortable saying "no" to requests or commitments that you cannot manage?

  4. When someone criticizes you, do you listen openly without becoming defensive?

  5. Do you maintain eye contact and use confident body language during discussions?

  6. Do you advocate for yourself in situations where you feel treated unfairly?

  7. Are you able to express your needs and desires without feeling guilty?

  8. When resolving conflicts, do you seek a solution that respects both your needs and those of others?

  9. Do you speak up in group settings when you have an idea or suggestion?

  10. Are you able to give constructive feedback without hesitation?

Scoring:

Assign the following points to each response:

  • a. Always = 4 points

  • b. Often = 3 points

  • c. Sometimes = 2 points

  • d. Rarely = 1 point

  • e. Never = 0 points

Results:

  • 30–40 points: Highly assertive. You effectively balance your needs with those of others, demonstrating confidence and respect.

  • 20–29 points: Moderately assertive. You assert yourself in many situations but might occasionally struggle with confidence or confrontation.

  • 10–19 points: Occasionally assertive. You may hesitate to express yourself or stand up for your needs in certain situations.

  • 0–9 points: Not very assertive. You may have difficulty asserting yourself and could benefit from developing your communication and confidence skills.
